ANNA SEMEGEN November 20, 1927 - February 20, 2006 Peacefully, with her family at her side, Anna Semegen passed away at the Holy Family Nursing Home at the age of 78. Anna was born in the village of Drohovyzhe, in Western Ukraine. During the Second World War, she was taken to work in Germany and Austria, eventually making her way to England. There she met and married Michael in 1949. In 1953, they immigrated to Canada, settled in Winnipeg and began to build a new life for themselves. Anna immediately found work in the garment industry as a seamstress. She was employed with Freed and Freed, Great-West Garments and later with Eaton's. Anna was a loving and devoted wife and mother, who encouraged her family to be involved in the Ukrainian educational, cultural and religious community. In keeping with her spiritual beliefs, she was a very committed member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and a member of the UCWLC. As well, she was a member of Institute Prosvita's Women's League. Family gatherings meant everything to Anna. She would spend endless hours preparing food for the occasion and always made sure that there was enough to send home with everyone. Mom enjoyed her time in the kitchen where she created many new torte recipes for all to enjoy. Mom was very proud of her children, but no one was more important than the grandchildren. They enjoyed endless hours together, forming their first garage band, playing soccer and hockey in the basement, going to the park or baking in the kitchen. Baba was a great entertainer. Baba and Dido often took the grandchildren on excursions and hosted many sleepovers. Baba always had the ability to make everything fun and will always be remembered for her great sense of humour. Even though Anna loved being at home, she also enjoyed cross-Canada family vacations, travelling to Hawaii several times, and visiting her homeland, Ukraine. Anna leaves to mourn, her daughter Marijka and son-in-law Garth Collier; son, Myron and daughter-in-law Wendy (Marcischuk), and five grandchildren; Michael, Marc, Alexander, Laryssa and Adam. In Ukraine, she is survived by her sister Marysia, brothers Nykola, Stefan, and their families. Anna was predeceased by her husband Michael, parents Ivan and Rosalia, and brother-in-law Wasyl. Prayers will be sung at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Divine Liturgy, will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 24, also at the cathedral. Fr. M. Kouts officiating. Interment at All Saints Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Mr. Michael Gembarsky and Mr. Joe Dutchak. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Anna's memory to Holy Family Nursing Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, MB, Sts. Vladimir and Olga Chapel Restoration Fund, 115 McGregor St., Winnipeg. The family wishes to thank Holy Family Nursing Home, especially the staff of the St. Francis unit, as well as Dr. Babick for their continuous care and compassion. VICHNAYA PAMYAT REST IN PEACE, BABA.
